“David Palmer, a retired solicitor, has a long interest in Suffolk School paintings which started as a result of a Thomas Smythe work being on the wall of his bedroom as a child. Interestingly the picture had been inherited by his Mother on the death of her Father in the Early 1950’s. Her Father was a grocer in Ipswich during the depression and paintings were often accepted as payment for food at the time. On finding that “his” painting was by Smythe he decided to buy another two paintings in order that all three of his children could each have one.
As always happens it did not stop there and he built up a collection of 19th Century Suffolk School paintings as well as works by the Norwich School. He still retains enough works to distribute amongst his children, but as a result of downsizing, wishes to make available much of his collection to other enthusiasts.”
