Cavendish Morton (1911-2015) – Eye, Suffolk, artist
Regular customers will know that at “English Antiques” we like to promote artists of East Anglia, just like any good restaurant that fosters local produce!
Over the Years we have had many works by Cavendish Morton. “Cavvy” (as he was affectionately known) lived in Castle Street, just around the corner from our showroom, here in Eye.
Cavendish came from a very artistic and creative family, it was in his blood you might say, although during the Second World War he worked in the aircraft industry. He married and moved to Suffolk where he became an art teacher and art therapist. In fact he was the Mayor of Eye on two occasions!
We particularly love his maritime and coastal art works, but he was also well known for dreamy landscapes, looking through flora and fauna and sometimes factual topographical subjects.
He was a member of many art groups and associations, including the Norwich and Norfolk Art Circle, a founder member of the Norwich Twenty Group and the Norfolk Contemporary Art Society and was also Chairman of the Gainsborough House Society. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, a bench mark of quality for the most highly regarded artisans.
The latest work we have for sale is an early one. Painted in 1961 in oil on board, an atmospheric beach landscape in Aldeburgh. Works in oil are more scarce, most we see are in watercolour or mixed media. We believe it had been in the same family collection since its creation.
Its a lovely horizontal view and thickly painted, almost “impasto”. It appears simple in composition, but relays a feeling of holiday and seaside. We are normally here from Wednesdays to Saturdays, so please call in and take a look.
